John Davis

John grew up in North Carolina and moved to Fort Worth in 1992.
His mother was an elementary art teacher and encouraged him to take art lessons when he was young. He continued these lessons until twelve learning some basics about drawing, painting with oils and working with pastels.
His interest in art faded during high school and college years feeling he didn’t have enough talent to pursue art with any fervor. However, when he came to Texas he began visiting the Kimbell and Amon Carter Art Museums and various galleries and realized that a vitally important part of his life had been buried. He decided that art was worth pursuing simply because it was something he enjoyed doing.
The following years were used experimenting with various media such as oils, acrylics, colored pencils, and wood sculpting. The colored pencils and wood sculpting provided the most satisfaction so he began studying wood carving with the German sculptor, Ludwig Kieninger. He spent four years with him and during this process realized how fundamental drawing is to carving and painting. His drawing and sculpting therefore seemed to go hand in hand.
At the present time works in colored pencil have taken the forefront and he is pursuing a technique that leads to finished pieces similar in nature to the look of an oil painting.
His colored pencil paintings begin with a base of pastels to provide the background color and then over this are added numerous layers of colored pencil.
John says, "In my pencil paintings I strive to obtain a sense of mystery through lights and darks. I find that what lurks in the shadows can often be as interesting as what reveals itself in the light.
