Steven DaLuz is a native of Hanford, California, who presently resides in Texas. “My interests are equally split between figuration and abstraction—so I have chosen to create two distinctive major bodies of work. Currently, reference to landscape and spirituality inspire my abstract work. The idea and feeling of place is more important than a specific location”, says
Steve." When I paint abstractly, my mood directs me to simply begin working on a blank canvas or panel, without the constraint of observation. In this way, I allow the progress of the painting to determine the direction the painting will take. Expressiveness becomes paramount. Often, I find I am unable to fully convey the depth and surface quality I am after with paint by itself, so I employ other materials to achieve the right mood and expression in my work. I am drawn to the reflective qualities of copper, silver, and gold, as well as the verdigris patinas that appear on bronze sculptures. As a result, it’s not uncommon to find precious metal leaf, beeswax, tar, and other substances employed within my abstract paintings. In the end, I hope the viewer will simply appreciate the aesthetic quality of the artwork and reflect on the process that may have been used to create it. I believe the viewer’s interpretation of my work is as valid as my own
intent." Steve completed the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree (Summa cum Laude) in 2003, with a concentration in painting from the University of Texas at San Antonio. His work has been widely exhibited in juried exhibitions throughout the region, and the San Antonio International Airport, where his work took “Best in Show” by the city’s Regional Artist Consortium in 2004. In March, 2006, one of his works garnered his first International Award for artistic excellence. Steve’s drawings and paintings are represented in private collections in 17 States and several foreign countries. His diverse influences are Rembrandt, John Singer Sargent, and contemporary artists Odd Nerdrum, Antoni Tapies, Sasha Rogers, Dan McCaw, and Vincent Desiderio.
