Always fascinated with art, Kellerman
was encouraged to pursue that avocation by her husband and by
her mother, a gifted china painter. In 1967 she began studying
with such well known artists as Bror Utter and Ben Konis of
Texas, and Ken Hosmer and Ann Templeton of New Mexico.Strongly
attracted by the impressionists from Europe and America, the
Russian Nicolai Fechin, and the resource "The Natural Way
to Draw" by Kimon Nicolaides, Kellerman drew upon
her southwestern legacy in evolving a bold impressionistic
style, created by applying pure pigment with a palette knife
using no medium.
After graduating from the
University of Texas with a degree in Journalism and minor in
English and Art History, native Texas Shirley Kellerman and
her husband settled in Fort Worth. Her love for the
New Mexico landscapes, its missions and people are the subjects
of many of her paintings.
