Mary Kay grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan and was raised in a musical family. She began painting seriously in watercolor after a move to Minnesota in 1985, and has developed her representational style characterized by softness, luminosity, and meticulous preoccupation with color. "I like to be precise, but work that is too
photo realistic can look too harsh. I soften my edges to give them a soft velvet feel." She began painting in oils in 2001 and continues her passion for natural subject matter in the still-life venue.
