Chuck Middlekauf

Chuck Middlekauff's western images of cowboys and humorous lifestyle vignettes are bathed in rich color, light, shadow and texture.

His images introduce whimsical items depicting things used hard and left behind to be blasted by the sun and weathered by storms and blown about until they have nothing to stop them but a few strands of barbwire.

"I bring out the character and essence of my subjects through scale, composition and point of view," Middlekauff says. "I don't always paint things exactly the way they are." Instead, he paints a dirt-spattered cowboy in crusty boots sitting on a fence dangling a yo-yo, or "retired" boots hanging upside down on fence posts (a Western sign of Welcome).

The scope of his paintings also includes other fading images of the West, aging motel signs with neon just barely in place, diner counter scenes, rusty pickup trucks, toys and things our dads or grandpas used to have in their workshop.

Chuck paints memories from the "old days."

Though these images may reek of nostalgia, Middlekauff's paintings present a contemporary vision of the updated cowboy that is comfortable in either rustic western decor or the most modern environment.
