Patricia
Nix was born and reared near, El Paso, Texas, and she is a
fifth generation Texan. In creating her work, she draws from
real life. Nix states, "I want every viewer to have a
deeply personal and emotional reaction to my work. To achieve
this, I include objects that are a part of everyone's
experience; toys, cards, and pieces of children's games."
She adds, "Dreams become more of a reality because real
objects are used." "All of my work involves more time
in thought and conception than in applying the paint, but they
demand an even longer period of meditation, brought together by
an endless chain of associations."
Nix’s work is
displayed throughout the world in prestigious public, corporate
and university collections, including the Smithsonian
Institution’s National Museum of American Art as well as
numerous national museums.
Although she has
long resided in New York City and France, Nix is a native Texan
and her earliest influences came from the culture of Texas: deep
religious faith, southwestern churches, Mexican icons, and
Native American crafts. Her work embraces art history and draws
on the major stylistic movement of out time.
The term
“American Baroque” has been coined to describe her work.
